The formula
Required run rate = runs needed ÷ overs remaining, where overs remaining = balls left ÷ 6.
Current run rate = runs scored ÷ overs faced. Overs like 12.3 mean 12 overs and 3 balls, or 12.5 overs in decimal.
Worked example
Chasing 181 in a T20, a team is 100/3 after 12 overs. It needs 81 more runs from 48 balls (8 overs):
- Required run rate = 81 ÷ 8 = 10.13
- Current run rate = 100 ÷ 12 = 8.33
- That is 1.69 runs per ball, with 7 wickets in hand.
Remember that the target is one more than the first team’s score. If the first team made 180, the target is 181.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between target and runs needed?
The target is the total the chasing side must reach. Runs needed is the target minus the current score.
What happens if the scores finish level?
The match is a tie. In many T20 leagues a super over then decides the winner.
